Malaysia car seat law 2026
Is a baby car seat mandatory in Malaysia?
Yes. Under Malaysia's Road Transport Act 1987 (amended, effective January 2020), children under 135 cm or below 36 kg must use a certified child restraint in private vehicles. Quinton Baby car seats meet ECE R129 i-Size and ECE R44/04 standards recognised by JPJ.
What does ECE R129 i-Size mean?
ECE R129 (i-Size) is the latest European standard for child car seats. It includes side-impact testing, ISOFIX in certified installs, and rear-facing until at least 15 months. It improves on the older ECE R44/04 regime.
ISOFIX vs seat belt installation — which should I use?
ISOFIX attaches to your car's anchors for a more consistent fit. Seat belt routing works when ISOFIX is unavailable. Many Quinton models allow both so you can move between vehicles.
How long should my child stay rear-facing?
Under ECE R129, rear-facing until at least 15 months is required. Many experts recommend rear-facing as long as your seat allows — it spreads crash forces across the head, neck, and back.
